MEET THE SQUAD: A Personal Glimpse into Our Team

As we race further into 2022, we would like to take a moment to introduce you to Afolabi Oshinowo in this edition of Meet the Squad.

I am a Senior Analyst at Nuvera and I enjoy working with our clients to solve knotty challenges and develop solutions that can be easily implemented.

What led you to this career? Curiosity about the business of healthcare and a desire to make a difference outside clinical practice. I have learned about the ecosystem and the key players that make the US healthcare system what it is: who they are, what their interests are, and how they align with one another to provide services to the main client – the patient.

What’s a trip that changed you, and why? The time I spent in Liberia readily comes to mind. That trip coincided with the Ebola crisis. Having a firsthand experience of the epidemic coupled with the broken healthcare infrastructure nurtured my curiosity around building a healthcare system that works for all stakeholders. I remember that the crisis was aggravated by a lack of an efficient healthcare system. That curiosity spurred me to get an MBA from Tuck and to join Nuvera.

What behavior or personality trait do you most attribute your success to, and why? Persistence. I always say to myself: “one day at a time”. Deciding to pivot from clinical medicine came with its unique challenges. I had to learn and relate to so many things at the same time: a new place, new culture, new work environment, new life. I initially felt overwhelmed but I’m proud to say I’ve grown and I love we work we do at Nuvera

What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy day? Spending time with my family. Watching my daughter achieve her developmental milestones is inspiring. I still remember when she was so tiny, she could fit into the palm of my hand. I also remember her first smile, baby steps, and words. Even though she’s so attached to her mum (for obvious reasons), I’m proud to say her first word was “papa”. Yes!

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it? I never thought of it as a talent until I noticed it helps to brighten the day for others. I have a contagious laugh; literally, very contagious. I get tickled so easily by what people say or do. Imagine being in a meeting and the speaker cracks a joke. That joke gets me laughing and, suddenly, everyone else joins in. On several occasions, I’ve had people tell me hearing me laugh made their day, and I love the moments we get at Nuvera to enjoy a good laugh. Besides, laughing is as good as a doctor’s prescription.
